      Yes. Dogs, like many animals, communicate with each other in a variety of ways. When close by, a lot of dog communication is done using body language and smell rather than sound. But when they’re further away or not able to get to each other, they can bark to communicate at longer distances. This is why dogs mostly bark when shut in gardens or kept on leads and not allowed to get close to other dogs – they don’t need to do it so much when they’re able to communicate more closely.
